Every handcrafted canoe begins with the highest grade lumber, milled in-house to pliable strips. These strips are applied to the forms and coated with fiberglass sheeting and epoxy resins (the process commonly referred to as fiberglassing) on the inside and outside, creating a 'sandwich' of materials. This provides incredible strength that could not be achieved by the individual components. These shells are then trimmed out with gunwales and decking, installed with stainless steel screws to prevent corrosion. Scrollwork in the decks comes in several different designs, each adding to the elegance of the canoes' looks and lines. Lastly, the hulls and trim are afforded ultraviolet (UV) protection with three coats of marine-grade varnish. Each canoe takes 120 to 150 hours to complete.

The time-tested wood/epoxy construction method yields a lightweight boat combining the beauty of wood with the durability and maintenance requirements of a plastic boat. Just a couple hours every few years will keep your LucasCraft canoe looking as good as it did on its first voyage. We are confident that your handcrafted woodstrip canoe will become one of your family's valued heirlooms, passing from one generation to the next.
