Beginning with a beautifully drawn Chesapeake Light Craft design, the easy to handle models of the Annapolis-based company allow us to focus primarily on the woodworking aspects of the boat. The 16’ length makes this particular sea kayak ideal for waters with little to moderate chop, as well as light touring. Storage hatches are an option for stowing gear.
The hand-cut inlay work of curly and bird’s eye maple shines in a deck of black walnut. The heron and cattails are primarily curly maple save a strip of ebony in the head; the blue crabs have bodies of bird’s eye and legs of curly maple. The coaming, built to take a spray skirt, is solid black walnut. It consists of 28 separate pieces that were individually fit and steam bent into place.
Fiberglass cloth fully encapsulates the entire boat, including 4 oz. cloth over the handcrafted inlay work on the deck. Five coats of resin cover the coaming to ensure a watertight seal. The deck was then coated with five coats of marine-grade spar varnish and buffed to a smooth finish.
We believe that a boat, however beautiful, wants use. By painting the hull we ease the pains of beaching the kayak. Any scrapes can easily be touched up with a paintbrush.
In using veneers to accomplish our deck designs, we are afforded a much wider variety of wood species without having to worry about the issues of weight and water resistance. We will happily work with customers to design and construct a unique craft and deck that will be truly one of a kind. Prices vary based on the intricacy of the work and inherent time involved.
